Disguised as a boy, Chizuru Yukimura leaves home to search for her father, Koudou, a doctor who's gone missing in Kyoto. The city turns out to be far more dangerous than she expected. When she's attacked by a couple of ronin, a white-haired, red-eyed samurai kills them both—but before she can process what just happened, three members of the Shinsengumi show up and take him down. The Shinsengumi, the shogun's special police force, haul Chizuru in for questioning. It turns out they're also looking for her father, so the chief agrees to let her stay with them while they investigate. Working as an assistant to Toshizou Hijikata, the Shinsengumi's second-in-command, Chizuru gradually uncovers the truth: her father's disappearance is tied to both the political chaos tearing through Kyoto and the mysterious white-haired samurai she saw that night.
