Synopsis

Wonder 3 is an Osamu Tezuka manga and anime series following three alien agents sent to Earth on a straightforward mission: decide whether the planet poses enough of a threat to warrant destruction. They've got a doomsday device with them—basically a massive black ball with antennae that goes by several names depending on who's talking about it (anti-proton bomb, solar bomb, neutron bomb, take your pick). The three agents—Captain Bokko, Nokko, and Pukko—start out looking humanoid, but once they land on Earth they swap into the bodies of creatures they've collected: a rabbit, a horse, and a duck respectively. They get around in the Big Wheel, a tire-shaped vehicle that's surprisingly versatile—it handles land, water, and can be modified to fly. What's interesting about the series is how it tackles surprisingly mature themes for a cartoon of its era. It digs into ecological issues and poverty in ways you wouldn't necessarily expect from a Tezuka property about alien invaders and giant destruction devices.
