In 2017, a breakthrough in bioengineering led to the creation of Vanguards—super-soldiers enhanced with nanomachine technology. Instead of advancing medicine or science, these weapons became the centerpiece of a new global arms race. Vanguards are incredibly effective in combat, but there's a catch: the nanomachines that make them powerful eat away at their lifespans. Most retire after a few years of service, assuming they live that long. Our protagonist Liuli is one of these soldiers, and she's running out of time. With only 380 days left to live, she's assigned one last mission: rescue a hostage from a civilian location. It's not what she's built for—Liuli's entire existence has been about fighting and killing—but she accepts the job anyway. Things get complicated when she discovers the hostage-taker is Zhou Zhongrong, a former Vanguard himself. He's demanding the government hand over someone called "Eden's son," and he's desperate enough to cry about it. Liuli sees him as a traitor to everything Vanguards stand for. So instead of a rescue mission, what unfolds is a brutal showdown between two enhanced soldiers—two people who were engineered to be the perfect weapons.
