Planetes
It's 2075, and space travel is just part of everyday life now. Thanks to all the tech advances, humanity's colonized the moon, opened up space to commercial exploitation, and spawned massive corporations to handle it all. Ai Tanabe is an enthusiastic woman who loves everything about the cosmos, so she signs on with Technora Corporation to work in their Debris Section—basically the department that cleans up all the dangerous space junk floating between Earth and the moon. The reality hits her pretty fast, though. The Debris Section is basically a joke at Technora. It's understaffed, underfunded, and stuck using a beat-up old ship everyone calls the "Toy Box" to haul in debris. But Ai doesn't quit. She sticks with it and gradually gets to know the crew—a mishmash of weird personalities like Philippe Myers, the bumbling but decent chief clerk; Edelgard Rivera, a mysterious temp worker who keeps to herself; and Hachirouta Hoshino, a hotheaded guy who dreams of having his own ship someday. Planetes doesn't fit the usual sci-fi mold. Instead of focusing on grand cosmic events, it uses the vastness of space as window dressing for the everyday lives of regular people—people who might have started on Earth but whose real dreams are out there among the stars.
