Shirahata no Shoujo Ryuuko
In 1945, American forces invade Okinawa. The Japanese military conducts a brutal guerrilla defense while civilians like young Ryuko are forced to flee. She becomes separated from her grandparents, and her mother and sister are killed during the chaos. Alone, Ryuko makes her way across the devastated island until she finds shelter in Japanese-occupied caves—only to witness Japanese soldiers committing suicide with hand grenades as the island falls. The film adapts a children's book by Akira Aratagawa and Hikuji Norima, which was itself inspired by real wartime footage of an Okinawan girl named Tomiko Higa surrendering and waving a white flag as the battle ends.
