Archaeologists uncover a crude artifact during a dig in an area about to be flooded by the Three Gorges Dam. They determine it was made by Mak-zi (also called "McFat"), an ancient Chinese philosopher and inventor whose ideas were way too far ahead of their time—he'd supposedly created all kinds of electronic gadgets centuries before electricity was even discovered. But the artifact's rough craftsmanship makes it too ugly for any museum to want, whether in China or internationally. Rather than destroy it, nobody knows what else to do, so they stick it on a barge that just keeps drifting down the Yangtze River. Fast forward eighteen generations, and we meet McDull (Kwok Kwan Yin), a kindergartener living in Hong Kong and the latest descendant of Mak-zi.
