Synopsis

One foggy morning, a black and white Toyota AE86 blazes past Keisuke Takahashi's Mazda RX7 on Mount Akina. Keisuke becomes convinced he's just seen the ghost of a legendary racer who died on the mountain. Desperate to finally beat this phantom driver, he rallies the Akagi Red Suns to challenge the local Akina Speed Stars to an exchange race—hoping the competition will force the "Ghost of Akina" to reveal himself. Takumi Fujiwara, unlike his friend Itsuki, couldn't care less about cars or racing. He doesn't get the thrill that gets other racers' blood pumping, and whenever someone mentions racing, all he can think about is the tofu deliveries he runs for his father every morning in an old AE86. But those early morning runs up and down Mount Akina have made him intimately familiar with every curve, braking point, and hairpin on the mountain—better than anyone else around. When Akagi shows up to challenge the Speed Stars, things go south fast. The local team is completely outmatched. Their only shot at winning is to get Takumi and his panda-colored AE86 to race for them. After some convincing, Takumi finally agrees to take the wheel and head up Mount Akina to fight for the pride of Akina's racing scene.
