Kyubi no Kitsune to Tobimaru (Sesshoseki)
The film adapts a novel by Okamoto Kidou that draws on the legend of Sesshoseki, a poisonous stone said to exist at the base of Mt. Chausu, an active volcano in Tochigi Prefecture. The area has been known since the Heian period for releasing toxic gases—hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, and arsenic—that have killed both animals and people who ventured too close. According to legend, a kitsune once transformed itself into a beautiful woman in China, seduced the emperor, and brought disaster to the kingdom. It eventually made its way to Japan, where it took the form of a maiden named Tamamo and seduced the Japanese emperor as well. When the kitsune was finally exposed and killed, it cursed those responsible and transformed into the poisonous stone Sesshoseki at this very location.
