Akihiko Chuuzenji is a literature teacher who believes that reason can explain literally anything. When he starts working at Tokyo Metropolitan Mitogawa High School, he crosses paths with Kanna Kusakabe—an upbeat girl who means well but constantly gets herself into messy situations. After hearing rumors that a ghost has cursed one of their classmates, Kanna sneaks into the school at night to investigate. What she actually finds is Akihiko hanging out in a secret room full of banned books. Rather than come clean, he spreads word that Kanna was the one who exorcised the ghost. Now Kanna's stuck with a reputation she never asked for. Her classmates are convinced she's an occult expert and keep dragging her into investigations of supposedly paranormal events. At least she's got Akihiko backing her up—despite being kind of difficult, he's genuinely invested in proving that superstition is pointless and reason wins every time.
