Akihiko Nomura is 17 and goes by "Bobby," though he's hardly living up to any grand image that name might suggest. He's a failing student obsessed with motorcycles—the kind of guy who'd rather tinker with his bike than do anything else. His strict father keeps pushing college, his mother's basically invisible, and his one real cheerleader is his nosy but well-meaning little sister. His only claim to fame so far is getting featured in a motorcycle magazine after a road trip, which sounds cooler than it probably is. That magazine ends up changing things when a girl his age reads it and writes him a letter—actually a pretty long one, surprisingly romantic too. Bobby's never gotten a letter from a girl before, so he's genuinely excited about it. His responses, though, are sparse. Really sparse. Like, one sentence per letter sparse. This obsession with motorcycles has basically taken over his life. He drops out of school to work at a biker bar, which finally pushes his fed-up father to kick him out. Bobby crashes at a friend's place, and things are looking up when his pen pal says she'll call him. But his boss decides that same day to take him out to a motocross track—and whatever happens next, it's not what anyone saw coming.
