Utsunomiko
During the chaos of the Jinshin civil war in 762, a baby boy with a small horn on his forehead was born to a mother who saw him as a demon and abandoned him. An old shūgenja woman found the child and raised him, naming him Utsunomiko—"Divine Child of the Heavens"—and telling him his horn represented a bond between heaven and earth. Growing up in the wilderness, Miko learned the ways of Shugendō and eventually ventured into nearby villages out of curiosity. What he found troubled him: common people living in grinding poverty and suffering. He began using his spiritual powers to help them however he could. Over time, his frustration with the self-serving rulers and their constant power games turned into open conflict with the Imperial Court itself. This set him on a long path as a defender of the oppressed.
