Gonta: The Story of The Two-Named Dog in The Fukushima Disaster
Tongari Atama no Gonta: Futatsu no Namae wo Ikita Fukushima Hisai Inu no Monogatari
On March 11, 2011, a massive 9.0 magnitude earthquake devastated the Tohoku region. The Tomita family was forced to evacuate, but they had to leave behind their 8-year-old dog, Gonta. Around the same time, Yoshino, a university student in Tokyo, volunteers with a pet rescue group and heads to the disaster zone. She finds a dog there and names him Peace, only to discover he's gravely ill—doctors give him about a month to live. Determined to reunite Peace with his original owner, Yoshino tracks down the Tomita family and realizes Peace is actually Gonta. Against all odds, Gonta survives far longer than expected, eventually becoming an inspiration to countless disaster victims. The experience also draws Yoshino deeper into pet rescue work, something that clearly matters to her for personal reasons.
