It's Christmas Eve and snowing, but Tyltyl and Mytyl aren't in the holiday mood—their mother is sick in bed. Unable to sleep that night, they're startled when a magical spirit named Berylune crashes through their window and tells them something wild: there are other worlds beyond the one they know. The spirit whisks the kids away on a quest to find the Blue Bird of Happiness, hoping it'll save their mother. They're joined by various spirits and their pets, who've somehow become human-sized companions.
