Eight-year-old Hiyori lost her parents. Yui was running from an abusive father. One day, they both ended up getting off at Kitsunezaki station—fleeing their pasts, though for different reasons. Then the earthquake and tsunami hit. Their lives were spared, but when officials at the evacuation center asked who they were, neither girl had a clear answer to give. That's when Kiwa Yamana, an elderly woman, stepped in and helped them out. From that point on, the two girls took on new identities: Yurie became Yui, and Moeka became Hiyori. The three of them—the two girls and Kiwa—settled into a life together at an old seaside house called Mayoiga. It wasn't much, but it was theirs, and for the first time, all three of them had something like a real home.
