The Boy and the Heron
Kimitachi wa Dou Ikiru ka
Three years into the war, Mahito's mother dies in a hospital fire. His father quickly remarries—to Natsuko, the younger sister of Mahito's late mother—and the three of them leave Tokyo for the countryside, moving into his mother's family home. There, a strange gray heron keeps bothering him, following him around like it has some kind of agenda. Mahito's still reeling from his mother's death and can't adjust to this new life when he learns that Natsuko is pregnant. Then the heron drops a bomb: it can talk, and it claims his mother is actually still alive. The bird lures him to a mysterious tower on the property and tells him he can save her, but Mahito isn't convinced. When Natsuko vanishes one day and he sees her walk into the tower, he has no choice but to follow her inside. He ends up falling into a strange world beneath his own—a place where life and death blur together. Now he's stuck navigating this bizarre realm trying to find Natsuko, and he'll have to figure out what it really means to be alive if he ever wants to make it back home.
