Fifty years after a catastrophic war nearly destroyed Japan, society has rebuilt itself around SHELL—a centralized network that uses nanomachine technology to eliminate disease and ensure long lifespans. The catch? Citizens have to work 19 hours a day and remain plugged in. Disconnect from the system, and you become a "Lost"—a monstrous transformation that's supposedly irreversible and lethal. Without the fear of death or pain keeping people in line, antisocial behavior has started to spiral. Factory worker Takeichi, desperate over his brutal working conditions, recruits his artist friend Youzou Ooba for a suicide protest against the government. When the plan falls apart, both men are mortally wounded and transform into Lost. But during the cleanup operation, dispatch member Yoshiko Hiiragi makes a shocking discovery: Youzou can transform back to human form—something that's supposed to be impossible. As only the third person known to survive the Lost transformation, Youzou teams up with Yoshiko to investigate why Human Lost cases are suddenly spiking. Whatever's causing it could either save civilization or destroy what's left of it.
