An elite French boarding school, 1887. Serge Battour has recently graduated and finds himself reflecting on his school days. Years earlier, in 1880, the same school. Serge is the mixed-race son of a deceased viscount and Roma prostitute—intelligent, talented, and kind, but fundamentally isolated because of who his parents were. When he arrives at school as a new student, he's paired with Gilbert Cocteau, a strikingly beautiful boy who keeps to himself and secretly trades sexual favors for money. Serge's initial efforts to befriend Gilbert go nowhere, yet something magnetic pulls them toward each other anyway.
