Synopsis

Yuugi Mutou is a shy, friendless high school kid who's obsessed with games. While staying at his grandfather's game shop, he finds an ancient Egyptian artifact called the Millennium Puzzle. Legend says it'll grant any wish to whoever solves it, so Yuugi spends years working on it, hoping to finally make some friends. When he finally cracks it, his wish somehow comes true. Around the same time, a new card game called Duel Monsters explodes in popularity. Players—called duelists—battle each other using monster cards alongside magic and trap cards to mess with their opponent's strategy. Yuugi picks it up fast and starts enjoying a pretty normal life with his new friends. That doesn't last long though. Seto Kaiba, an undefeated duelist and arrogant billionaire, kidnaps Yuugi's grandfather and forces him into a match using his rare Blue Eyes White Dragon card. Suddenly Yuugi's thrown into high-stakes duels where mysterious forces are pulling strings behind the scenes. He manages to beat Kaiba with help from his "other self"—a pharaoh's spirit trapped in the puzzle—and becomes an unofficial legend called "The King of Games." But that title comes with a price. Now that he's famous, everyone wants a piece of him, and Yuugi has to rely on his wits and determination to keep his loved ones safe.
