Buddha: The Great Departure
Tezuka Osamu no Buddha: Akai Sabaku yo! Utsukushiku
In the ancient Shakya Kingdom, King Suddhodhana's wife Maya has a prophetic dream: a white elephant with six tusks enters her body, signaling that their son Siddhartha Gautama will be extraordinary. A wise sage named Asita confirms it, predicting the child will become a chakravartin—a universal ruler. But the story isn't just about princes. A young man named Chapra suffers under the oppressive caste system. When the Kosala army invades Kapilavastu, Chapra helps drive them back, but rather than stay enslaved, he joins the Kosala forces himself—determined to climb the ranks and build a better life for his mother. As Siddhartha grows up, he receives all the training a future king should have. Yet he couldn't care less about military strategy or governance. He's consumed by bigger questions—what's the truth of existence? What's the meaning of life? Even as Kosala's power threatens to swallow the Shakya Kingdom, Siddhartha abandons his royal duties and leaves to seek enlightenment, abandoning everything to find the answers he's searching for.
