Synopsis

The Shin Yogo Empire faces a devastating drought, and its Star Readers see only one solution: ancient legend says a water demon was slain by the first emperor and eight warriors to save the land. If another demon appears, killing it could end the crisis. Problem is, the water demon has possessed the emperor's own son, Prince Chagum—and the emperor has ordered his execution. Enter Balsa, a spear-wielding mercenary passing through the empire. She rescues Chagum from an assassination attempt, and his desperate mother asks her to keep him safe from the emperor and his hunters. Balsa agrees, bound by an old vow she once made. What follows is Balsa's journey protecting Chagum across the land. It's as much about discovering the beauty in life and nature as it is about the unlikely bond that forms between a hardened warrior and the boy she's sworn to protect.
