In 2011, a small portion of humanity started developing psychokinetic abilities called "Cantus." Over a thousand years later, Saki Watanabe is the last of her friend group to awaken these powers in the small town of Kamisu 66. She enrolls at Sage Academy, a school for psychics—except not everyone's abilities are equal. Shortly after arriving, one of her classmates, considered weaker than the rest, vanishes without explanation. Walking home with her friends—Maria Akizuki, Shun Aonuma, Satoru Asahina, and Mamoru Itou—Saki encounters two strange creatures called "Monster Rats." These mole-like beings treat people with Cantus as gods. When Saki uses her powers to help one of them, she receives overwhelming gratitude in return. The encounter leaves her confused about where Monster Rats actually fit in their society. Then another student disappears. As Saki and her friends dig into what's happening around them, they start uncovering answers that reveal the unsettling truth: their seemingly perfect world is built on a dark past that nobody talks about.
