Synopsis

In the kingdom of Highland, humans once betrayed the fairies who lived there freely. The secret to controlling a fairy is simple: take their wing. Whoever holds it holds their life. Humans exploited this ruthlessly, enslaving the entire fairy population—but 15-year-old Ann Halford wants to change that. She believes fairies and humans should be equals. Ann's real passion, though, is confectionery. She dreams of becoming a Silver Sugar Master like her mother was before she died. To make that happen, she needs to reach the capital city of Lewiston and compete in the annual Royal Candy Fair. More than just entering, though—she needs to win a royal medal for a creation made from silver sugar. That's the only way to get the title. For the dangerous trip to Lewiston, Ann hires Shall Fen Shall, a fairy warrior with a sharp tongue. She'd just freed him from a slave trader, and she makes him an offer: work as her bodyguard, and she'll return his stolen wing once they reach the capital. He's skeptical about her motives, but as they travel together, they actually start to understand each other. Slowly, they begin opening up about what they really want.
