Synopsis

Nikuko-chan is the cheerful, heavyset woman everyone in her small northern coastal town knows—she runs a grill and has become something of a local fixture. After years of drifting between men and towns, she's finally settled down with her daughter, also named Kikuko, on a houseboat anchored in the bay. The two are just trying to find their footing. Nikuko-chan's loud, outgoing personality actually works in her favor—she tackles life with genuine enthusiasm. But her daughter Kikuko? She's the opposite: quiet, reserved, and constantly mortified by her mom's behavior. While her mother's doing fine, Kikuko's stuck in that awkward stretch where everything feels pointless—until she's suddenly caught up in typical middle school drama and tangled up with a mysterious classmate named Ninomiya. Her adolescence turns out to be anything but boring.
