Synopsis

Edo-period Japan has thrived for decades after narrowly escaping the catastrophe everyone thought was coming. The new shogun, Yoshimune "Nobu" Tokugawa, finds herself questioning the traditions she's inherited—most of which don't make much sense to her modern way of thinking. A plague that kills only men has decimated the population, leaving them at just one-fifth of what it was. Yet somehow, three thousand young and beautiful men still fill the ranks of the Oooku, the shogun's Inner Chambers. Curious about how things got this way, Nobu digs into the historical records of the mysterious disease. She discovers that every custom and law in place today exists because of the plague—and that they all trace back to Iemitsu Tokugawa, the first female shogun, whose story was far from a gentle one. At the heart of it all is a young monk named Arikoto Madenokoji, who gave up everything to serve in the Oooku and never looked back.
