Nello is a talented young artist living in a small village outside Antwerp, Belgium. He scrapes by selling milk at the city market with his sick grandfather, and his only real friend is Alois—the daughter of his landlord, who despises Nello for being beneath his daughter's station. When the landlord finds out how close they've become, he ships Alois off to school in Antwerp to keep them apart. Everything changes when Nello discovers an art competition honoring the legendary Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens. The prize money alone would help, but there's something better: winning gets you admitted to an art school in the same city where Alois is studying. Suddenly he has a real shot at a better life. The problem is, life keeps throwing obstacles in his way. What keeps him going is Patrasche, his dog—a loyal companion he once rescued from someone who was beating him to death. As Nello faces one hardship after another, Patrasche sticks by his side.
