When Tatsuo Kusakabe moves his family to the countryside in 1950s Japan, it's to be closer to their mother, who's in the hospital dealing with a serious illness. His two daughters, Satsuki and Mei, gradually settle into rural life—until Mei spots a small, furry creature in the yard and chases it into the forest. That's where she discovers Totoro, a massive forest spirit, and the two quickly become friends. Soon Satsuki meets him too, and suddenly the girls' ordinary days are filled with magical encounters and adventures among the woodland creatures.
