A collection of four folk tales from the Koshiji area of Niigata prefecture (historically known as Echigo). Episode 1: The Azuki Mochi and the Frog A cruel old woman curses an azuki mochi to turn into a frog if her daughter-in-law eats it. When the daughter-in-law overhears this threat, she decides to. Episode 2: Satori A woodcutter warming himself by a deadwood fire encounters a spirit that takes the form of a disembodied eye. The creature proceeds to read the woodcutter's mind perfectly, guessing his every thought. Episode 3: The Fox's Lantern Lost in the dark, an old man discovers a beautifully patterned lantern abandoned by a fox spirit. The next day he reluctantly returns it, only to discover. Episode 4: The Three Paper Charms A young apprentice priest loses his way in the mountains and accidentally seeks shelter at a witch's hut. To escape being eaten, he uses three sacred paper charms to make his way back to the temple.
