It's 1532 when 12-year-old Esteban, a foundling from Barcelona, discovers he has an incredible ability—he can command the sun to appear, earning him the title "Child of the Sun." After his adoptive father dies, Esteban learns he was pulled from a sinking ship as a baby. The mysterious medallion he's worn his whole life seems connected to something in the New World, possibly the legendary Cities of Gold. Desperate to find his real parents and answers about who he actually is, Esteban sets sail from Spain. He quickly meets Zia, an Inca girl who was kidnapped from her people years ago. She wears an identical medallion to his—a shocking coincidence. The two are soon joined by Tao, a young castaway from the Galápagos and the last survivor of the Heva Empire, the civilization supposedly responsible for building the Cities of Gold. The three kids follow Coyolite, the bright star depicted on their medallions, as they journey through unexplored regions of the New World. They're searching for the Cities of Gold, convinced that finding them will lead them back to their missing parents.
