In the distant future, Earth's population has exploded, forcing most of humanity into massive orbiting space colonies grouped together as "Sides." The elites keep Earth for themselves while pushing everyone else into space—and unsurprisingly, people aren't happy about it. In Universal Century 0079, Side 3 breaks away and becomes the Principality of Zeon, launching a full-scale war against the Earth Federation. Zeon's got way fewer resources than the Federation, but they've got a huge advantage: mobile suits, giant humanoid robots that completely change the game. Their best pilot is Char Aznable, a masked ace known as the "Red Comet." When Char's squad discovers that the Federation is building a prototype mobile suit called Gundam in Side 7, they attack hard and fast. Amuro Ray, whose father designed the Gundam, jumps into the cockpit and manages to drive them off. With Char now directly after him, Amuro has no choice but to escape the colony aboard a Federation warship.
