Apparently he's always lurking around, watching sleeping children to find his next victims. Before bed, her quirky Uncle Drosselmeyer gives Clara a wooden nutcracker doll as a gift. He's a little self-conscious about it since the craftsmanship is pretty rough everywhere except the heart, which is actually perfect. But Clara doesn't care—she absolutely loves it.
