Fourteen years after Third Impact, Earth is a wasteland and civilization is in ruins. Shinji Ikari wakes up trapped inside Evangelion Unit-01, rescued from space by Asuka and Mari—only to be taken prisoner by WILLE, a military faction now run by his former guardian Misato. She and the others treat him with cold suspicion, refusing to help him deal with what he's done. After being rescued from WILLE by Rei, Shinji returns to NERV headquarters feeling lost and hurt. There he meets Kaworu Nagisa, who actually treats him with kindness and fills him in on NERV's ongoing war with the Angels. For a moment it seems like things might get better. But that peace doesn't last. The next battle forces Shinji to face the horrifying truth: he's no longer fighting Angels, but his former friends. And in this final confrontation over humanity's future, he learns the hardest lesson of all—you can't undo the past.
