After humanity defeated an alien invasion with the help of combat androids called Neans, they colonized Mars and settled into peace. The Neans, their purpose served, were relegated to servitude as second-class citizens. These androids need a daily drug called Nectar to survive, making them entirely dependent on their human masters. But not all Neans are created equal. Proto-Neans are specialized androids capable of summoning metallic exoskeletons that grant them superhuman strength. Rouge Redstar is a Proto-Nean working undercover as an agent for Aletheia, a government organization that monitors and regulates Neans. She partners with a human investigator named Naomi Orthmann. Their assignment: hunt down the Immortal Nine, a group of rogue Proto-Neans whose motives remain unclear but pose a serious threat to humanity. The problem is, someone else is on Mars investigating a series of murders—and they think Rouge is their killer. As she and Naomi dig deeper into the Immortal Nine, they start uncovering secrets about the androids and the organization they both work for that neither of them expected to find.
