People are dying in explosions and fires, and rumors are flying around the imperial capital about rat-faced soldiers tearing through the city. Everything points back to secrets from a dynasty that was destroyed by thunder and fire. Some unseen force brings three very different young men together. Jing Yifei, the cold and commanding leader of the Jinwu Guard, gets tasked with investigating the rat soldiers and uncovering what's really going on. Bai Qi, a reclusive descendant of Jieyi living in the mountains, convinces his master to come down and recruit a young machine master for the guard—but the person he's looking for, Qin Ming, turns out to be a con artist and kidnapper. As the three of them are forced to work together, they gradually uncover the truth behind the thunder and fire incidents.
