When the Patrian civil war broke out, the outnumbered North created something desperate: hybrid soldiers, part human and part beast. These "Incarnates" were nearly unstoppable on the battlefield, their godlike strength letting them turn the tide of the conflict. But as the fighting dragged on, the beasts inside them started causing problems that couldn't be fixed through normal methods. After the war ended, stories emerged of Incarnates struggling with what they'd experienced. Many couldn't handle what the war had done to them. Hank Henriette, a former captain of the Incarnates himself, now works as a Beast Hunter—tracking down and killing Incarnates who've been consumed by their inner demons. Nancy Schaal Bancroft watched a Beast Hunter execute her father, who had been an Incarnate soldier. She set out for revenge, determined to find the man responsible. But when she actually encounters Hank, everything changes. Instead of just wanting blood, Nancy becomes driven to understand what really happened to her father and why the Incarnates are such a problem for society.
