Daphne in the Brilliant Blue
Hikari to Mizu no Daphne
The future Earth is drowning. Rising oceans have swallowed most of the planet, thanks to global warming running its course. Fifteen-year-old Maia Mizuki, an orphan, just finished middle school and is ready to tackle her dream job—joining the Ocean Agency, an elite paramilitary force that only accepts the smartest and toughest recruits. Maia's got what it takes, or so she thinks. Then everything crashes. She bombs her entrance exams, loses her apartment, gets mugged, held hostage, and shot. Not her best day. She's rescued by Rena and Shizuka, two women who work for Nereids, a scrappy outfit that takes on any job for the right price. With nowhere else to go, Maia signs up with them. The work is all over the place—hunting down criminals one day, chasing stray cats the next—and nothing goes exactly as planned. Two more recruits, Gloria and Yu, eventually join the crew. The show's title works on two levels. "Brilliant Blue" captures the world itself: endless ocean broken up by a handful of islands and floating cities. "Daphne" refers to a subplot that emerges halfway through and becomes central to Maia's story. It's the mystery that ties everything together.
