According to legend, eating mermaid flesh grants immortality. Five hundred years ago, Yuta consumed some without realizing what it was—and now he's stuck as an immortal, wandering Japan in search of a mermaid who might undo the curse. When he finally tracks one down, he discovers a disturbing truth: mermaids stay young by raising human girls as livestock, then eating them to absorb their youth. Yuta kills the mermaids and rescues the girl, Mana, though she's already consumed some mermaid flesh herself—meaning she's now cursed too. Despite having to kill them, Yuta isn't entirely unhappy about how things turned out. For the first time in centuries, he's not alone. Mana, who spent her entire life locked away in a hut, finds wonder in the simplest experiences. Now the two travel together searching for other mermaids, both desperate to find a way back to being human.
