Hiroki Fujisawa and Takuya Shirakawa are obsessed with two things: their classmate Sayuri Sawatari and the massive Ezo Tower looming across the Tsugaru Strait. The tower captivates them, so they decide to build a plane from a salvaged drone—dubbing it the Bella Ciela—hoping to reach its peak someday. When Sayuri joins them, the three make a pact to fly to the top together. But there's a problem: Japan is divided between north and south, with the tower sitting right on the border between American-controlled southern islands and Soviet-occupied northern territory, making the whole region unstable. Then Sayuri vanishes without a trace. Years pass before Hiroki and Takuya learn what happened: she fell into a mysterious sleeping disorder and has been comatose for three years. Even stranger, her condition seems directly connected to the very tower they promised to reach together.
