ELFs—or Equipment: Living Forms—were created over fifty thousand years ago to fight humanity's war against the Honkai, a force of decay and destruction. The project worked too well: the ELFs became genuinely sentient, forcing humans to recognize them as something close to equals. But when the Ninth Herrscher destroyed most of civilization, the ELFs all but vanished into the Sea of Quanta, seemingly lost forever. Somewhere in a bubble universe, though, things went differently. There, ELFs coexist peacefully with humans and attend ELF Academy, a school where they study just like any other student. It's a stark contrast to the grim main timeline—a place where you've got ELFs like Selune's Elegy acting out dramatic chuunibyou fantasies and Blood Embrace pulling off their ridiculous "gangster" antics. Basically, it's a surprisingly lighthearted escape from everything depressing happening elsewhere.
