Synopsis

Shizuma Origasa was once a celebrated samurai in the Aizu Domain, but that life ended when his region lost its war against the imperial government. Now broke and living in Tokyo, he scrapes by pulling rickshaws while desperately searching for his missing fiancée, Sumie Kanomata. Before dying, Sumie's brother Gennosuke—Shizuma's best friend—made him promise to protect her. After stopping an assassination attempt, Shizuma gets recruited into the police force, which gives him new resources to track down Sumie. But this job pulls him straight into the middle of a political mess. He finds himself caught between government insiders, die-hard rebels, manipulative courtesans, foreign troublemakers, and a shadowy yakuza boss named Kyoushirou Shuragami, all with their own agendas.
