Fuu Kasumi is a clumsy waitress at a small teahouse who one day spills a drink on a customer—and immediately gets targeted by angry samurai as a result. Desperate, she calls on Mugen, another customer in the shop, who steps in and dispatches them with an unorthodox, almost breakdancing-like fighting style. This catches the attention of Jin, a wandering ronin with a precise, traditional sword technique, and the two end up dueling. Their fight destroys the teahouse and accidentally kills the local magistrate's son—which lands both of them facing execution. Fuu saves them by hiring them as bodyguards, even though she's now homeless. In exchange, she wants their help tracking down a mysterious samurai she remembers only as smelling like sunflowers. Mugen and Jin aren't thrilled about the arrangement, but they agree anyway, and the three set off together on their quest. The main challenge? Keeping those two from constantly trying to kill each other. Set in an alternate version of Japan's Edo Period, Samurai Champloo follows this mismatched trio through an action-packed, comedic adventure full of inventive sword fights. The whole thing's set to a hip-hop soundtrack that perfectly matches the show's weird energy.
