Lu Over the Wall
Yoake Tsugeru Lu no Uta
In the coastal town of Hinashi, Kai Ashimoto grows up hearing his grandfather's warnings about mermaids lurking near Merfolk Island—supposedly man-eating creatures that killed his own mother. Because of this tragic legend, music is practically forbidden in the Ashimoto household. That doesn't stop Kai though. He secretly makes beats on his laptop and posts them online. Two upbeat classmates, Kunio and Yuuho Ebina, stumble across one of his videos and try recruiting him for their rock band. Kai isn't interested, but he agrees to tag along to a practice session on Merfolk Island anyway. There, something strange happens that he can't quite explain. That night, while Kai's working on music in his room, a mermaid shows up—drawn by the sound of his stereo. She introduces herself as Lu, and Kai quickly realizes she's nothing like the monster stories. Lu can manipulate water, and she grows actual legs whenever music plays around her. More importantly, she's genuinely kind and just wants people to accept her. As Kai and Lu grow closer, they help each other break through the walls they've built. Their friendship starts to challenge the old fears and silence that have kept Hinashi Town trapped for so long.
