Synopsis

Based on Ishii Hisaichi's 1979 manga, this sports anime follows the Seibu Lions baseball team as they push forward in a tournament. The story blends caricatures of real players with cartoon characters, creating a unique take on the sport. After star player Tabuchi carries the Lions to the next round, things take a turn for the worse. He falls into a slump—literally and figuratively, as his shadow grows increasingly faint—and the team can't seem to win without him at his best. His teammates and fellow players, along with Dokaben, try to snap him out of it by throwing a special Tabuchi Day to remind him how valued he is. The event tanks spectacularly. What finally pulls Tabuchi out of his depression is the arrival of a girl named Miyoko, who shows her support by dressing up as a cheerleader.
