The world is dying. Frozen wastelands and water scarcity have left humanity on the brink of extinction, with the only livable regions scattered around the bases of massive Orbital Trees. Legend says a wise sage holds the key to saving mankind—someone who knows how to produce water in unlimited quantities. Princess Ririha of Atland decides to take matters into her own hands. She climbs one of these colossal trees in an organic hot-air balloon, hoping to reach the Canopy—a strange, infinite expanse of transparent ice at the top—and find the sage. Instead, she meets Kaina, one of the few people actually living up there. But he's not who she was looking for. Stranded and unable to get home alone, Ririha convinces Kaina to help her. He's desperate to see the surface world anyway, having always thought it was empty. But as they make their way down and he learns about Ririha's country's conflict with the technologically superior nation of Valghia—not to mention all the other dangers waiting below—Kaina realizes this escort mission is going to be a lot harder than he bargained for.
