Kayoko is a sensitive first-grader in 1940 who cries easily—something her classmates definitely notice. She spends her days playing with friends, singing schoolyard songs, and hanging out with her three older brothers. Her mother is pregnant, and Kayoko's excited about becoming a big sister, though she doesn't really grasp what that means yet. Meanwhile, the war is ramping up, and patriotism becomes the norm. Like everyone else, Kayoko does her part: she even donates her favorite doll, knowing its materials will be used to make explosives. As the years go on, the war's impact becomes impossible to ignore. It seeps into everyday life—her life, her family's, everyone's around her. But nothing readies her for 1945 and the horrors that are about to unfold.
