Rugby is a sport where anyone can shine—all you need is the ball. The rules are straightforward: carry it past the goalposts while the other team tries to tackle you into the ground. But you can pass backward to a teammate or kick before getting hit. Unlike most sports, play doesn't stop just because someone got knocked down. Kenji Gion is a scrappy high school freshman at Kanagawa High School who's on the shorter side. Right after the opening ceremony, he meets Sumiaki Iwashimizu, a tall guy who's basically a nervous wreck. The rugby club invites them both to watch a match. Watching the game, Gion has a realization—yeah, bigger players have an edge, but there's room for all kinds of body types on the field. He immediately decides rugby is his sport and joins up, even though Iwashimizu bails. Gion doesn't accept that, though, and basically drags him into it anyway. The two of them throw themselves into intense training with one goal: winning Hanazono, the national high school rugby championship.
