Takeyuki Kanda, the director behind several anime including VIFAM, passed away suddenly on July 27, 1996, at age 52. Two years later, in 1998, a new VIFAM TV series was created in his memory. It aired from March 21 to October 3, 1998 in the Kansai region and ran for 26 episodes. Like the earlier "Twelve People Disappeared," this is a side story that introduces new characters and a new RV alongside the original cast. Story-wise, it slots between episodes 22 and 26 of the original series (though 24 and 25 are recaps). The new series breaks down into three sections: Act I (episodes 1-14), an Interlude (15-18), and Act II (19-26)—though Acts I and II don't really connect to each other. While it could theoretically be considered canon, it's now widely treated as an apocrypha or outright non-canon. There are several reasons fans debate its legitimacy, but honestly, watching it yourself is the best way to figure out where you stand on it.
