Synopsis

Chise is just an ordinary high school girl—small, weak, and not exactly brilliant. Her main happiness comes from her budding relationship with Shuuji, her childhood friend and classmate. They live in a quiet military town in Hokkaido where the biggest drama is usually about dating and dreading the brutal daily climb up "Hell Hill" before school. Then one day, Shuuji and some friends head to Sapporo to pick up gifts for their girlfriends. A massive air raid hits the city, killing thousands—including one of Shuuji's friends—and marks the start of an all-out war. In the chaos, Shuuji catches sight of Chise again, but she's completely unrecognizable: she's got steel wings and a massive gun grafted where her right arm used to be. Against her will, she's been turned into the ultimate cyborg weapon, capable of destroying entire cities single-handedly. As the fighting creeps closer to their hometown, the war takes its toll on Chise and Shuuji's relationship. Her transformation drives a wedge between them, and they're both forced to grapple with a haunting question: is Chise even still human?
