It's the 21st century, and the Galaxy Express 999 is ready to launch toward Andromeda. A strange girl named Jula pops up out of nowhere and confronts Maetel and Tetsuro at a museum, where she delivers a cryptic warning about humanity's impending doom before vanishing into space. Naturally, the two board the 999 and set off after her. Tetsuro tracks Jula down on asteroid Itokawa—the same one explored by the real-world Hayabusa probe—but she slips away again.
