Hoshiai no Sora
The boys' soft tennis club is on the verge of getting shut down. They're just not very good—constantly losing to the girls' team and struggling to recruit anyone who's actually interested. Touma Shinjou is desperately trying to find players who can actually help, but he's coming up empty. Then Maki Katsuragi transfers in. Touma spots him catching a stray cat with impressive reflexes and decides this is his guy. He immediately asks Maki to join the team, but Maki isn't interested in clubs. Touma won't take no for an answer though, and eventually wears him down—with the catch that Touma has to pay him and cover all the club expenses out of pocket. Once Maki actually joins, he turns out to be genuinely talented. He learns fast, picks things up instantly, and immediately becomes the best player on the team. At first this creates some tension among the guys, but Maki ends up being exactly what they need. His presence forces the rest of them to step up, stop slacking off, and actually take the sport seriously. As the club members start figuring out what they're capable of, they have to deal with real personal struggles and the awkward reality of growing up in middle school.
