Synopsis

Takashi Natsume, a shy kid with the ability to see youkai and the owner of the Book of Friends, keeps working through his past with help from friends old and new. His closest companion is Madara, a wolf spirit who acts as his self-appointed bodyguard. Madara usually disguises himself as a chubby cat named Nyanko-sensei and has a serious appetite for food and alcohol—he's arrogant as hell but genuinely protective of Natsume. Things take a turn when masked monkey youkai grab Natsume while he's separated from Nyanko-sensei and drag him into their forest, determined to get their hands on the Book of Friends. Once Nyanko-sensei realizes his "servant" has been kidnapped, he teams up with Natsume's other youkai friends to mount a rescue. The problem is, the monkey youkai's forest isn't their only obstacle—the Matoba Clan, an old enemy of Natsume's, is also lurking around. This season takes Natsume from the depths of the Matoba stronghold back to his childhood home, mixing the usual blend of danger and genuine friendship. It's where Natsume finally has to deal with his own past demons.
